| Trade Unions Support NSEL, Compañía Licorera and Grupo Pellas against the baseless CRI campaign launched by ANAIRC and UITA |
|
On Friday, May 29th, more than two thousand workers of Ingenio San Antonio and Compañía Licorera of Nicaragua came to Managua to express their support to these two companies that are the target of a defamation campaign, with no technical and scientific basis, launched by the Nicaraguan Association of Persons Affected by Chronic Renal Insufficiency (ANAIRC) and the International Union of Food and Beverage Workers (UITA). In front of the workers marched the main leaders of the trade unions that exist in Ingenio San Antonio and Compañía Licorera, as well as the national leaders of trade union confederations, including Jose Espinoza Navas of the Confederation of Trade Union Unity (CUS), Roberto González of the Sandinista Workers' Confederation (CST) and Carlos Martinez of the Autonomous Confederation of Trade Union Unity. The workers and their leaders rejected the campaign to boycott Flor de Caña that ANAIRC has been promoting and gave faith that the productive processes carried out by Nicaragua Sugar and Compañía Licorera comply with all national standards and international quality certifications. The demonstrators first went to the Ministry of Labor where they met with Minister Jeannette Chávez and handed her a letter requesting her good offices for arranging a meeting with the President of the Republic. Later they went to the BAC Center where the union leaders were received by Carlos Pellas Chamorro, CEO of Grupo Pellas, and several Nicaragua Sugar executives. During this meeting, union leaders expressed their total solidarity with Grupo Pellas and its companies and obtained assurances that both NSEL and CLNSA will not be intimidated by the shameful campaign and will continue forward with their business activities and committed to the success of these companies, labor stability and social and environmental responsibility policies. The CRI issue was also addressed in its true dimension as a disease that affects millions of people in the world and that is present in different regions of Nicaragua. NSEL will continue to promote actions, within its social responsibility policy framework, in favor of those affected by the disease in Nicaragua's western region.
